Mikey's Life....

Goshhh...O shucks...says Dr. Pink Pinkerton the herbalist extraordinaire (Pinky is the handsome dog in the picture up top, and that is Nurse Daisy his sister).

This is such a great herbal story..it never ceases to amaze us..the pwoer of herbals for our dogs and cats.

We used herbs that transformed Phlegm Heat and moved Qi and Blood through his chest...we supplemented the Kidney and Spleen Yang....and bowser says Dr. Pink...we're so happy that Mikey is doing so much better!

Here is Mikey's Story

Dear Holly and Mark,
I want to share Mikey's story with you and other visitors to your wonderful site.
My 11 year old Yorkie, Mikey had been slowly failing for weeks. He had stopped barking, running, never jumped up onto the bed any more and on March 25, 2009 he couldn't walk. I had been treating him for diabetes, an enlarged heart and a collapsed trachea with traditional western medicine. That morning I panicked and rushed him to the vet. After 48 hours of intravenous fluids and a $500.00 bill, he came home lifeless. He was diagnosed with kidney failure and severe dehydration. All they offered was more of the same traumatic treatment which I believe almost killed him. Mikey was basically given a death sentence by the vet. When the vet called to ask how he was doing I reported that I thought he was near death. The vet insisted on bringing him back in for more fluids. I said, "No I would rather have him pass at home."

The vet said, "Why, is it a matter of money? Are you giving up on your dog?"

"No," I said, "I'm giving up on you."

While he was in the clinic I began researching his condition and found Pawhealer.com. After completing the health survey for Mikey on the website, Mark called me. He and Holly whipped up a batch of miracles. A day went by and I honestly didn't think Mikey would survive until the Paw-healer remedies arrived. I called Mark and explained the situation and he immediately suggested that the herbs and supplements be shipped overnight. Good call Mark! By March 27th the package from Paw-healer arrived. Mikey got his first dose of his custom KD Support at 2:00 p.m. and by 4:00 p.m. he got up and walked to the door and asked to go out to urinate on his own power. This is something he hadn't been able to do for the previous 72 hours. Three hours later I gave him the custom Heart/Lung support. He became alert and interested in greeting a neighbor who had stopped by.

Three days prior he wouldn't even get up to greet me when I came home!

The next morning I got up and as I was walking down the hall he trotted after me bumping his head on my ankle the way he used to do every morning. I fed him and let him out to do his business. He strolled around the grounds like he use to do. Picking the perfect spots and even lifting his leg to urinate something he had stopped doing. Up to that time he would just go out to the same spot and just empty his bladder and come back into the house and plop down. My other dog heard some people talking across the street and she began to bark. Mikey let out a few gravely sounds and then belted out several real barks! The best thing happened that night when Mikey for the first time in literally months did something I just couldn't believe. He jumped up onto the bed to sleep near me. Believe me I just blubbered like a baby!

Every day he gets stronger and more alert. Every day his quality of life improves. That's what this is really about, increasing enjoyment for what ever time we have left together. Mikey may have received a death sentence from western medicine but there is no doubt in my mind that he was given a life extension by Holly and Mark at Paw Healer.

Thank you Holly and Mark. Paw-Healer is a wonderful resource to all of us minor dieties to our pets.

Sampsons Trachea and Enlarged Heart Story...

This is Sampson a 12 year old Shiz Tzu, my friend and business partner for
over 12 years. He's been through a lot in the last few years a auto accident
just over 4 years, then told that his little heart has enlarged just over a
year ago, in Dec. 2008 the house he knew burnt to the ground. The worst came
in February 2009 being told that he was dying because his trachea
collapsing, and three unknown tumors in his lungs. He wasn't ready to give
up on life, so he had me research about the trachea collapsing and maybe a
way to help him continue on.

We located pawhealer on the net and the email went to ask for any help. He
went on the "honey cough syrup" and the "Empirical Hound Heart Tonic"
modified for Cough. Sampson couldn't walk far without that dry cough taking
him to a dead stop and gagging for air. It's been over a month and Sampson
is acting like his little self, he's in charge at the gun shows we do
together and full of energy. He still gets a cough now and then but he
chases the wild cottontail when he sees one. He's go on a new formula of
herbs this coming week and we'll see how he does, I'm happy that his doing
so good.

I'm hoping that on the 30th of May 2009 we'll enjoy his 13th birthday and in
July we'll celebrate him doing gun shows with me here in Montana for 13
years.

The second picture is his expression after he was asked if he planned that
by kicking me would cause me to roll out of bed and onto the floor because
he didn't get his way. Sampson is extremely important.

Jeff's Progress...Thursday April 17th

Dr. Pink and I (the handsome fellow in the header) received this update about Jeff today. (read about Jeff) Yesterday we had increased his dosage of Zhen Wu Tang to a full scoop in the morning and at the night. It had an impact...Or should we say, a depact?

Because Jeff has diarrhea, we are asking that he stop the herbs until things harden back up and then we start again, with a reduced amount.

Jeff has a huge amount of accumulation around the middle, his girth is at whopping 28 inches. This is from the ascities due to congestive heart failure. It is our treatment goal to reduce this so that Jeff can breath easier.

Here is Colleen's daily report to the PawHealer team;

: Colleen
Date: 4/17/2008 6:35:08 AM
To: PawHealer
Subject: Update

Good morning Holly & Dr. Pink,

I switched the Z remedy to 1 full scoop last evening. Jeff only had cooked turkey throughout the day, and a couple of baby-food meat stix (like little hot dogs, but without the fillers, etc.) as a treat for taking his remedies.

Around 10:30 last night he was just settling in and I gave him some water. He lapped it right up, and completely, but then got down from the bed and asked to go outside. He immediately puked up the water, had diarrhea and peed before coming back in. He woke up in the night to go outside to pee and had diarrhea each time. He started around midnight, then again at approximately 2:30, and 4:00, approximately. Then he slept right through until around 7:30, when I took him out again, and he just peed.

When I gave him his morning remedy (W), he "escaped" to the back bedroom to hide from me. (I can just hear him in my head, 'you'll never catch me for the next dose!')

He also had a bout of diarrhea in the back of the house (inside) while we were out earlier, around dinnertime, which I know was really tough for him because he never, never goes in the house. I had given him the increased (Z) remedy about 20 minutes before we had to leave. I regret that we did not wait to do this until after our return, but we were going to be gone until around 9 pm.

My concerns (beyond his hopeful improvement) also relate to our varying schedules. I don't want to limit the amount of times I can give him the two remedies because of the fact that no one will be home to let him out if he has to go. I'm doing my best to keep it as regular as possible, but we have missed a dose or two. I've gotten the hang of the dropper and keep it as calm and swift as I can, given his resistance. Between my husband, son and me, we are able to keep an eye on him most of the day and night, but there are periods of time when no one can be there for a few hours.

Girth measurement remains at 28" today.

I am currently keeping an eye on his water intake and his desire to drink water. I think I am seeing a decreased volume overall, but I'll have to watch a little longer to be sure.

Meet Jeff....Working to Improve His Heart

Dr. Pink Pinkerton and I received a request from Jeff's person Colleen. Poor Jeff has congestive heart failure and it's causing Jeff to have ascities, which is water retention withing the abdomen.

Ascites is excess fluid in the space between the tissues lining the abdomen and abdominal organs (the peritoneal cavity).

Colleen (Jeff's person) whats Jeff to be more comfortable because he has been miserable. The main symptom of course is the very hard and rounded stomach due to this water accumulation.

The other symptom that Colleen wanted to address is that Jeff constantly has to pee. Also he has no stamina and gets tired very easily.

Dr. Pink Pinkerton, the herbalist extraordinarie, where very happy to work with Colleen and Jeff.

Our Traditional Chinese Medicine diagnosis is Heart , Kidney and Spleen Yang vacuity with water flooding pattern.

This called for the treatment principle to fortify the Spleen and warm the Kidneys, free the flow of Yang and disinhibit water.

We used the formulas Zhen Wu Tang (True Warrior Decoction ) and Wu Ling San in order to accomplish these goal.

Coleen is wonderful about giving the Dr. Pink Pinkerton and The Pawhealer updates, we will continue to post them as we receive them.

Another Thank You To the PawHealer Team

We've been so busy, that Pinky and I have neglected to keep up with our posts. We're going to make an effort to post at least every other day. That's because we are having wonderful success with our very complex cases.

This thank you note is from a pet owner whose dog has Congestive Heart Failure. Dr. Pink Pinkerton and I conferred and we decided to make a fundamental change to Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, which is a formula that helps move the blood through the heart.

We added a very famous herb called Dan Shen the base formula. This wonderful herb is the most studied herb for heart related issues. And as you can read from the thank you note below, our modification helped the quality of life for a very sick little dog.

Here is the thank you note from a very happy dog mom!

Herbs for Your Dogs Congestive Heart Failure

Unfortunately, I have had first hand experience with a family pet that had significant heart disease that inevitability lead to Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). This was a result to a lifelong exposure to second hand smoke. It was a very sad and frustrating experience because it was my aunt's dog whose name was Puppy. Patty, (my aunt) came to visit, and at the time, Puppy was hacking away and he was unable to breathe properly. I really thought the poor dog was going to die on the spot and I knew something had to be done. Clearly, his prescribed veterinarian medicine was not working for him, because the dog was experiencing horrible distress. That is how I became hands on familiar with a formula called Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, which spoken in English is called Dispel Stasis In The Mansion of Blood.

What the name of this formula infers, "Dispels Stasis"; Is that it tells us that the action of this herbal formulation. is designed to "move blood" . Understanding that the end result of CHF is the backing up and pooling of blood within the heart, is the key in which to grasp the purpose of this formula.

From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, this health issue of the blood backing up, as well as the blood not moving, has a name called Blood Stagnation. It makes sense right? The blood is not moving, therefore it has become stagnated. This problem of Blood Stagnation becomes an obstruction that consequently disrupts the flow of Qi throughout the dog's body.

As result of this obstruction of blood, systemically whats going on here, is that the fluids are backing up into the chest. This then may cause the dog to experience a shortness of breath, or perhaps continual coughing or maybe even pain. Therefore, that being said, it is the intent of this formula to break apart and disperse this Blood Stagnation, so that once again, the dog's blood may move unobstructed, and more importantly reestablish the free flow of blood and Qi, allowing the dog to be more relaxed less distressed.

This is a very famous formula designed by the great TCM practitioner Wang Qing-Ren published in the book Corrections of Errors among Physicians dated back to 1830. For people who use herbal formulas and based upon proper presentation, this famous formula is used to treat such bio medically-defined disorders as; coronary artery disease, rheumatic valvular heart disease, and hypertension. (just to name a few)

Dr. Steve Marsden DVM writes that Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang is commonly used for small animals with Blood Stasis in the Upper Burner,(above the diaphragm) which manifests itself as congestive heart failure. He goes on to say that Veterinarians realize that mobilization of Qi and Blood in the Upper Burner (above the diaphragm) leads to better entry of Qi and Blood in the Channels (arteries), and to successfully move Blood, one must move Qi.

Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang , which is a formula that strongly moves Qi and Blood, is used in order to treat dogs with Blood Stagnation that exists within the chest. This formula, Xue Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang is the most common formula prescribed by veterinary herbalists in canine medicine in order to treat the following diseases;

* Congestive heart failure
* Kennel cough
* Thoracic tumors
* Hemangiomas
* Cutaneous mast cell tumor

Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang contains the following herbs:

tao-ren, dang gui shen, hong hua, chuan niu xi, sheng di huang, chi shao, zhi ke, chuan xiong, jie geng, chai hu, gan cao

peach seed, dong quai root, carthamus flower, cyathula root, raw rehmannia root, Chinese red peop0ny root, bitter orange mature fruit, Sichuan lovage root, platycodon root, bupleurum root, Chinese licorice root

I would would make the addition of dan shen to the formula, since I have had a good response from this herb. Furthermore, there has been a tremendous amount written about this particular herb and the benefits it has when working with heart disease.

This formula can be taken with western medicine. However, I caution you to not try this without consulting with your Veterinarian . Our veterinarian was really open to this type of treatment, so much so, that she suggested other formulas for us to give to Puppy. With our doctor's oversight, we also were able to stop the western medication because we had so much good luck with this formula. Puppy stopped coughing and seemed to be able to breath without laboring. He lived a good quality life until he died 18 months later of old age.

Sparky Has Congestive Heart Failure

Spakry hails from Tacoma, Washington, and has just been told by the vet that he has Congestive Heart Failure and along with the fact that his trachea is now beginning to collapse.

Sparky is a 12 year old male Silky Terrier and other then this cough that has just started of recent, his mom says he is as active as a puppy and has no other health related issues.

The only real symptom that Sparky is exhibiting is the cough that worsens with activity. Unfortunately the recent set of x rays shows that Sparky does have an enlarged heart....

After asking Susana his mom many questions, the only real clue I could gather is a tendency towards dryness.

The cough is described as a gagging sound, as if Sparky is trying to cough up phlegm.

I asked about vaccinations and Sparky does get them on a yearly basis, and his mom did remember that about two years ago, after the shots, Sparky developed a cough that never really went away.

The only clue that I could ascertain as to what TCM pattern is the cough that is worse with exertion. The pattern that fits this symptomology is Blood Stasis with water obstruction pattern.

The treatment principle is to Boost the Qi and move the Blood, support the Spleen and disinhibit water.

I am also going to clear the lungs of any potential toxic heat, just in case there is any deep seated pathogen which may be aggravating the situation and causing an infectious cough.

The treatment plan will be to invigorate the blood circulation in the upper burner and dispel blood stasis, I will unblock the meridians and relieve pain, if any exist, and warm the Yang of the heart and dispel damp and phlegm

Sparky will need to take this formula long term. The formula is called Circulation and I'm going to modify it with some haang qi and hawthorne berry.
